Village Post Office opens in Glenwood

RUSHVILLE — Glenwood is a small town in Fayette County nestled among apple orchards and farmland. It also is the location of the 75th Village Post Office (VPO) in the nation to be opened by the U.S. Postal Service.

Monday, the 14th VPO in the Greater Indiana District opened in the Glenwood Mini Mart, Glenwood, 46133.

Jo Temple, has managed the Mini Mart since it opened 22 years ago, sees the partnership with the Postal Service as a win-win for the Glenwood community and for her store.

“Our store is located at the crossroads between Connersville and Rushville, so we’re easily accessible, we serve the farming community and also commuters as they go to and from work each day. We’re open outside Post Office hours, it’s very convenient to come in to our store and buy stamps and get postal packaging while buying milk and bread. I hope to see a definite increase in foot traffic as a result of having the VPO located here,” Temple said.

The Glenwood Mini Mart is open Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. until 7 p.m., and on Saturday and Sunday from 9 a.m. until 5 p.m.

The new postal center was officially opened by manager of post office operations Carmen Jennings and several USPS executives and local officials present. The ribbon-cutting ceremony took place at 11:30 a.m. and an open house followed.

Last year, the Postal Service introduced the VPO model as an alternate retail location for postal products and services, especially in rural communities. VPOs are operated by local businesses contracting with the Postal Service, and offer a range of popular postal products and services including stamps and flat-rate packaging. The Greater Indiana District has opened more VPOs in rural communities than any other postal district in the country. Another VPO is slated to open in Corunna on Nov. 27. The U.S. Postal Service receives no tax dollars for operating expenses and relies on the sale of postage, products and services to fund its operations.
