Rants, raves and random thoughts 101709
Greetings, one and all, and welcome! Thanks much for joining me. There’s plenty of mail to ponder and we’ll get to it shortly. First, a couple of items from my Shameless Plug file.
n I’d like to encourage everyone, music lovers in particular, to join me at Scottypalooza Oct. 24 at the Rushville Elks and K of C lodges.
This benefit fundraiser will begin at 5 p.m. with a hog roast. Live music gets underway at 6 p.m. (Check the entertainment module of our Web site at www.rushvillerepublican.com for details on who is playing when and where.) The $10 ticket allows you to eat as well as access to both venues. Proceeds will benefit local cancer patient Scotty Brooks.
n I also want to remind you about an amazing deal we’re offering through the end of the month on home delivery of this very newspaper.
Subscribe to the Rushville Republican for just 99 cents a week.
That works out to just $51.12 for a year; $25.56 for six months; or only $12.78 for three months.
This offer is valid through Oct. 30 to new subscribers. Visit our office at 126 S. Main Street, Rushville to get signed up, watch for details in the paper, or give us a call at 932-2222 for more information.
n Lastly, please keep the HSUR Shrine Club’s annual community breakfast in mind. Serving is from 6 to 11 a.m. Oct. 31 in the RushShelby Energy Community Building.

n Rants to selling out to high bidders. Parcels, fields and farmsteads are being sold to people, groups and investors from other counties, states and beyond. Little by little our county won’t be ours any longer. Do you really think those money-rollers care about Rush County, its businesses, its schools, or the neighbors and friends you didn’t consider and left behind? Take a peak at a plat book and realize the buyers with their sub-corps and licenses; they’ve been swallowing up every acre they can get.
n It's called life. We can choose to see the positive side of our circumstances or wallow in self pity and become a bitter, negative person, never really enjoying the blessings of life.
n Fact, the largest expansion of government power over individuals took place during the Bush administration with the Patriot Act, an act that gave the government unfettered access to all kinds of information about us as individuals.
n I don't want to pay taxes any more than anyone else but some of these city employees really need a pay raise. Their pay isn't competitive with the private sector to begin with.
n Very few government employees get paid as well as the private sector, but they get more days off and much better benefits. It all averages out.
n I hope the loser in the green truck on Perkins Street Friday night has a hard time sleeping at night after stealing our beloved Husky.
n Congratulations, Lions, on your success at Lucas Oil Stadium!
n Raves to local first responders. I had occasion to need them a while back, and this group right here in Rushville would have to be among the finest anywhere. A sincere thanks to all of you, as well as police officers and firefighters.
n Raves to the RCHS girls’ and boys’ soccer teams. It was a great season. Thanks for all your hard work in representing our school and our community.

- River runs through it My wife and I are very competitive. Take skiing for example. I don’t like skiing. Mary Ellen says she doesn’t like it more than I don’t.
- Soothing '60's surf sounds I'm sitting in my home office enjoying a serenade of rhythmic pulsations emanating from the outside wall.
- All that glitters isn’t gold Have you seen all the ads on satellite or cable television urging us to invest in gold?
- Some famous and not-so-famous last words (Friends, as I was looking for an old column I did in 2003 about the Chicago Cubs, I came across this. It’s not all about the Cubs, but it certainly hints at what the Cubs’ last words are at the end of every season, “There’s always next year.)
- Things have changed over the years Rushville used to own the power plant that supplied the city with electricity. The local telephone company was also owned and operated by those in town who used it.
- Rants, raves and random thoughts 072410 Greetings, one and all, and welcome! Submitted correspondence has been on the increase of late, for which I thank you, and we’ll get to it in short order. First, a thought or two from Your Humble Narrator.
- Rising speculation about bombing Iran's nukes Many years ago, I was privileged to attend a dinner with James Rowe, one of the "passion for anonymity" young aides to Franklin Roosevelt, original author of the winning strategy for Harry Truman's 1948 campaign and close confidante of then-President Lyndon Johnson.
- English channels When I was kid, there were a lot of rules in our house. My father had a workshop in the basement, so his list of no no's was a great deal longer than Mom's: paint thinner is not a beverage; a band saw is not a musical instrument; a blow torch is not a hair dryer.
- Through sunglasses darkly As promised last week, I now present “The Disaster on East Aster,” the street we lived on during our summer vacation to Wildwood Crest, N.J.
- Working harder to buy locally When my wife posted something on Facebook this week about the concept of “buying local” it got me thinking. How hard do we really try to do that? Do we really care?
