Rants, raves and random thoughts 102409

Greetings, one and all, and welcome! Thanks much for joining me. Mail has been pretty steady of late so I’ll try to be brief with a couple of reminders.

n The RCP’s “Haunted Trails” fundraiser is now the “Haunted Basement” because of the threat of rain. The lower level of the American Legion, corner of First and Morgan, has been transformed into a fright zone. Hours are 7 to 11 p.m. Other details available on our Web site (www.rushvillerepublican.com); just search “haunted” and the story we ran will pop up.

n Another shameless plug for next weekend’s Shriners Community Breakfast. Serving 6 to 11 a.m. in the RushShelby Energy Community Building. Advance tickets are available from local Shriners and at the door. This is the big one! Don’t miss it!

With that, let’s check correspondence. It’s time to hear from The Roiling Hundreds!

n Why I voted with the Left: Because I’m too irresponsible to own a gun, and I know that my local police are all we need to protect me and mine from murderers, thieves and rapists.

n Who is responsible for the controlled substances at the Animal Shelter now? Does it matter? Guess it’s who you know.

n Please read to your children every day. I looked at the ISTEP scores on the Indiana Department of Education Web site. Rush County scores were mostly at the state level or, in some cases, below. Why?

n I have a special needs child who attends RES. I went to a meeting where Dr. Williams, Mr. Wilson and Ms. Harcourt talked about adding four classrooms for special education at RES. I signed a petition in favor of that to benefit my child and others with special needs. Where are they? I feel like it was something said so that all would get passed for certain people’s benefit. Politics again. Makes it hard to believe anyone.

n Lets see, talking about Main Street: 1.6 miles of road and it will take three years to build it. I wasn't aware the 3 Stooges had a construction company, and are getting paid by the hour. It won’t take Indy three years to re-do 465 on the west side, and that's 10 lanes wide. (The targeted completion date is Oct. 28, 2011. That’s two years, not three. Just FYI. kg)

n Raves to selling out to high bidders? Are you kidding me? The world goes to the high bidder. Any other view is nothing but being out of touch with reality. What is great about America is that the farmers can decide for themselves. Of course, what is also great about America is that other people can have opinions out of touch with reality.

n I just want to thank all of the "perfect" parents and grandparents with "perfect" kids that feel the need to parent my children and give unsolicited advice. I have news for you, your kids aren't that "perfect" and my kids aren't that bad. Open your eyes and live in the real world.

n Whitey Oesterling turned 100 years old Aug. 1. Whitey's a great guy. Always has been, and has been an asset to our community for many years. Give Whitey a little praise, why don't you?

n No one is perfect and anyone who thinks they are needs to wake up!

n Rants to the RPD for writing parking tickets in the rain on cars parked on the south side of the baseball diamond on Tony Stewart Way Oct. 16. People were attending the Mays PTO chili supper at the high school cafeteria, a special event. It seems strange to me that I've seen cars parked along this street at this location for many years for baseball games, the county fair and other special events at the school and no tickets were issued. No visibility or obstruction to traffic on the roadway was affected by the cars parked at this location on the evening in question. As a matter of fact, I haven't heard of or seen anything about parking tickets for improper or illegal parking since the parking meters were removed downtown, but I've seen lots of violations ignored.

Don’t forget to write down your rants, raves, and/or random thoughts and to send them to me. You can do so via the U.S. Postal Service (Rushville Republican, Rants and Raves, P.O. Box 189, Rushville, IN 46173), fax (765-932-4358), e-mail (kevin.green@indianamediagroup.com), through our Web site (www.rushvillerepublican.com – just “add a comment” to any posted story and it’s fair game), or drop your legibly written comments off here at the office (126 S. Main Street, Rushville).

Until the next time, I’ll leave you with this:

“Our words have wings, but fly not where we would.” — George Eliot, British novelist, 1868

Be good. kg

  • Rising speculation about bombing Iran's nukes

Many years ago, I was privileged to attend a dinner with James Rowe, one of the "passion for anonymity" young aides to Franklin Roosevelt, original author of the winning strategy for Harry Truman's 1948 campaign and close confidante of then-President Lyndon Johnson.

When I was kid, there were a lot of rules in our house. My father had a workshop in the basement, so his list of no no's was a great deal longer than Mom's: paint thinner is not a beverage; a band saw is not a musical instrument; a blow torch is not a hair dryer.
