On Sunday the Indianapolis Radio Control Modelers will take to the sky for the 3rd Annual Community Air Show as part of the Morristown Derby Days weekend. From 1 to 4 p.m. radio controlled planes of all sizes and types will entertain the crowd with loops, rolls, and spins while performing a virtual dance in the sky. Aircraft as small as two feet weighing less than a pound to giant gasoline powered aircraft more than 12 feet in wing span and weighing up to 55 pounds will perform. There also will be radio controlled helicopters, parachutists and racing planes that approach 150 mph. Sport planes and scale models of World War I and World War II aircraft also will be flying for the crowd.
The club will have a booth and planes on display at the Derby Days activities Friday and Saturday. The club also will have an aviation themed float in the Saturday parade. The club has about 70 members and has been in the Indianapolis and Eastside area for nearly 50 years. They have been flying out of their current Blue River Air Park field just west of Morristown for the last seven years. Members range in age from six to 86 and all have a passion for building, flying and talking about aircraft of all types.
The club members also will have several trainer aircraft available for the public, both young and old, to try their hand at becoming a student pilot and try flying a radio controlled plane.
Soft drinks and snacks will be available for purchase and admission is only $3 per adult for an afternoon of fun and entertainment for the entire family. The club field, also known as the Blue River Air Park is located on Blue River Road about one mile south of US 52. Blue River Road is on the west side of Morristown and just east of the Blue River Bridge on US 52. Further information about the event and other club activities is available on the club Web site at www.indyrcmodelers.com or by calling Tim Mills at 317-627-9743 or Jack Sallade at 317-835-4284 or stop by the club booth at Derby Days.
