Brian Sheehan, local historian and member of the Rushville Common Council, who also authored a book on the history of Rushville basketball, which completely sold out, is excited to announce that his book on local baseball called, “Take Me Out to the Ballpark” is now available.
The book’s primary focus is capturing the history of the local high school, but other baseball stories and tidbits dating back to 1895 can also be found.
“I had a great time playing baseball as a kid. Working on this book, brought back a lot of great memories and rekindled my love for the game. I was very fortunate to play on some very good teams, with some great players and even better friends. This book is dedicated to that group, along with their parents and the great summer days we all shared playing the game of baseball.”
The 200+ page book features: Season summaries, team pictures, individual and team records, top ten lists, individual statistics for players, Indiana. All-Stars, coach’s statistics and other local baseball trivia. Sheehan worked with Winter’s Publishing in Greensburg to finalize the book, along with local graphic designer Darrin McGowan with McGowan Designs, who helped design the book’s front and back covers and was instrumental in meeting a crucial deadline for the book to be completed and ready before Christmas.
The cost of the book is $25 and can be purchased locally at the Rushville Pharmacy or you can contact Sheehan at 765-561-5193 or on Facebook. For orders outside of Rushville, Sheehan will ship to anyone in the U.S. for just $29. Sheehan said the book would make an excellent stocking stuffer.
Sheehan reported that only a limited number of books are available, so if interested, act now. Sheehan also wanted to publicly thank the Rush County Historical Society, The Joe Keith Family, Rush County Youth Baseball, Rushville St. Patrick’s Day, The Council of Club’s Ball Diamond, the Emerald Group, Pavey’s Grocery, Scott Barne’s Gutter & Home Solutions and American Family Insurance for their generosity and financial support of the project.
All proceeds for the book will be donated to two local charities. “My hope is that we can sell out, like we did with the basketball history book. If that happens, we should be able to raise a fair amount of money for the Historical Society and Youth Baseball.
“It is my hope that this book will provide entertainment and conversation to local baseball players and fans by celebrating the game, as well as, the players and the coaches who have participated over the years. I also hope the stats section will inspire the next generation of Lion baseball players to work hard, play hard and achieve the results that will put them on many of the top ten lists in the years to come.”

On the cover is Dick Eckel pitching on Rushville’s first team in 1950. Eckel compiled a record of 13-3 in three seasons, registering 207 strikeouts, while walking just 79 in 103 2/3 innings of action. After graduation, Eckel signed a $10,000 contract to join the Detroit Tigers organization. The 6’1”, 200 pound pitcher played for the Toledo Mudhens.

St. Joe Festival underway in Shelbyville
The carnival rides, games and food booths are back for another year at the St. Joseph Parish Spring Festival on the corner of Broadway and Noble Streets in Shelbyville. The festival kicked off Thursday and runs through Saturday night. The annual fried chicken dinner will continue Sunday following the festival at the Knights of Columbus.

Pink Droyd (A Tribute to Pink Floyd)
