Critics Corner: 30 Seconds to Mars
One of my favorite new bands is 30 Seconds to Mars. The group is fronted by Requiem of a Dream actor turned musician Jared Leto. The Los Angeles trio just released their third album "This is War." The album bounces between modern rock with synthesizer effects and a pop rock base. It will remind you of Nine Inch Nails with an orchestra feel to it. I could do without all of the background vocals, which appear throughout the record, but it does not take away from its great sound. The best song on the album is "Hurricane," which has a small guest appearance by Kanye West. The song is very deep and asks the question, "would you kill to save a life?" The band tried to create a sense of drama throughout "This is War" and they succeed. I believe if you’re a fan or not you will love this record.

If you like the Cure and the Smiths with a little punk rock do I have a band for you. AFI has been around for more than 10 years but never received the attention they deserve. The band changed from dark Goth to a more appealing rock sound in 2003. Lead singer Davey Havok is the personality behind the band with his unique voice and crazy fashion sense. The new album "Crash Love" is about the emotions of death and romance over a great punk rock guitar sound. The best song that is getting air play on X-103 is "Beautiful Thieves." Don’t be misled by the gold heart on the album cover, "Crash Love" is still solid AFI. I believe it is some of their best work yet.
