Movie preview: “Oz: The Great and Powerful”

Rated: PG for sequences of action and scary images, and brief mild language

Running time: 2 hr 11 min

Cast: James Franco, Mila Kunis, Rachel Weisz, Michelle Williams, Zach Braff

Plot: Shady illusionist Oscar Diggs enchants curious audiences at a Kansas circus. When he is inexplicably transported to the wondrous world of Oz, he encounters three witches who pose him an awesome challenge: root out a ruinous force of evil that threatens to destroy the entire kingdom, and become the great leader that the population has been waiting for. Should Oscar succeed in summoning the necessary sorcery and creativity to deliver the land from darkness, he will forever be known as the Wizard of Oz.

  • St. Joe Festival underway in Shelbyville

    The carnival rides, games and food booths are back for another year at the St. Joseph Parish Spring Festival on the corner of Broadway and Noble Streets in Shelbyville. The festival kicked off Thursday and runs through Saturday night. The annual fried chicken dinner will continue Sunday following the festival at the Knights of Columbus.

    The first performance of the 2013 Rushville summer concert series will be with one of the nation’s top touring Pink Floyd tribute acts, Pink Droyd, and will also include a special solo acoustic set from Indiana native Doug Henthorn. The free event is 7 p.m., Saturday, June 1, at the Riverside Park Amphitheater in Rushville, located at 100 West Water Street.
