RUSHVILLE —
Every Saturday night there’s a dance in the northeastern Rush County community of Raleigh.
It’s been that way for 65 years.
Legend has it, shortly after World War II some area residents had an interest in dancing, but there was nowhere close to do so. Back then, there was a small gas station in town and people were dancing around the fuel pumps until area residents decided to do something about it.
An effort was made to raise the funds necessary to construct a dance hall. That effort was successful and people are still dancing in the Raleigh Community Building to this day.
“We have many dancers come from all around and say this is the best hardwood floor around,” said Ryan Gardner, a club officer and regular dance attendee. “There are dances every Saturday night. We have a live band and great music!”
Gardner said he wants to make it clear to everyone that the Raleigh dances will continue for a long time.
“It is my hope the dances will continue for another 65 years,” he said.
The dance hall is smoke-free and alcohol-free.
The weekly Saturday night dances run from 7:30 to 10:30 and are open to all ages.
Raleigh is located on CR 900 North, approximately 5 miles east of State Road 3.

Rush County Player’s season finale will be “I’m So Glad We Had This Time Together.” Named after Carol Burnett’s theme song, and featuring skits from her classic sketch comedy show, RCP’s version will also feature selections from Monty Python’s Flying Circus, Saturday Night Live, Mad TV, The Tonite Show with Johnny Carson and others.

St. Joe Festival underway in Shelbyville
The carnival rides, games and food booths are back for another year at the St. Joseph Parish Spring Festival on the corner of Broadway and Noble Streets in Shelbyville. The festival kicked off Thursday and runs through Saturday night. The annual fried chicken dinner will continue Sunday following the festival at the Knights of Columbus.

Pink Droyd (A Tribute to Pink Floyd)
The first performance of the 2013 Rushville summer concert series will be with one of the nation’s top touring Pink Floyd tribute acts, Pink Droyd, and will also include a special solo acoustic set from Indiana native Doug Henthorn. The free event is 7 p.m., Saturday, June 1, at the Riverside Park Amphitheater in Rushville, located at 100 West Water Street.
