“Inherit the Wind” auditions Wednesday and Thursday

Director Aaron Scholl and producer Bonnie Miller are proud to be bringing a classic tale of the debate of science vs. religion in the classroom back to the Rush County Players’ stage. Jerome Lawrence and Robert Edwin Lee’s award-winning “Inherit the Wind” is best known to most from the brilliant 1960 film, starring Spencer Tracy and Frederic March. Auditions for RCP’s rendition will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 16, and Thursday, Jan. 17, at RCP’s new digs, 306 N. Main St., Rushville. Call-backs, if needed, will be held on Jan. 23. Tentative show dates are April 5, 6, 7 and 12, 13, 14.

“Inherit the Wind is the story of a teacher, B.T. Cates, who is arrested for teaching Darwin’s theories. Famous lawyer Henry Drummond defends him, while fundamentalist politician Matthew Brady prosecutes.

This is a very thinly disguised rendition of the 1925 “Scopes monkey trial” with debates between Clarence Darrow and William Jennings Bryan taken largely from the transcripts.

RCP has presented this award-winning play before, and at that time, the attorneys were played by a real-life local attorney, and a beloved RCHS teacher. Scholl and Miller would love to see local officials, teachers or anyone who loves a great story come be a part of this examination of a debate that continues nearly 100 years after the events it is based on.
