The October 2009 meeting of the Rushville Music Study Club took place at First Presbyterian Church. As President Cindy Powers called the meeting to order, she asked everyone to rise to recite the meditation. Roll Call revealed a total of 16 members present, including associate and honorary members. There was one former member present as a guest, Sonja Dorr Binder, who was visiting with fellow Wisconsin native, Muriel Moore. Muriel reported that the Rush County Chorale has more than 50 members this season. The theme is “Ring in the Season” with the concerts featuring traditional Christmas carols and handbell choir accompaniment on some of the selections. The Chorale hopes to set the mood for the season with performances at 7:30 p.m. Nov. 21 and at 2:30 p.m. Nov. 22 at the Laughlin Center. Tickets are available from Chorale members and at the Rushville Pharmacy and King’s Family Bookstore and Printing.
After discussing a few more items of club business, Cindy adjourned the meeting to the program which was presented by Carolyn Sorber, Annette Niehoff, and special guest and honorary member, Mike Woods. Following this year’s “At the Movies” theme, they explored the musical offerings from the films, “Cold Mountain,” “Shall We Dance” and “Shrek.” Carolyn explained that the music from “Cold Mountain” has an Appalachian/bluegrass sound that compliments the setting of the movie, which is North Carolina during the Civil War. Annette and Carolyn harmonized on the songs from that movie, “You Will Be My Own True Love” and “The Scarlet Tide.” Next Annette presented the movie “Shall We Dance” which features, as one would presume, many danceable tunes. The first song for the evening from that movie was a dreamy rendition of the waltz “ Moon River ” played fluidly by piano man Mike Woods. Following that, Annette gave a rousing performance of the song “Sway” much to the delight of the audience. Finally Carolyn spoke a bit about the abundance of music to be heard in the movie “Shrek.” She sang its the love theme, “It Is You (I Have Loved)” and then in a duet with Mike, the opposing theme “Hallelujah” by the great Leonard Cohen. The program finished with music from this fairy tale, and a special round of applause was given to our knight in shining armor Mike Woods, the accomplished accompanist on all the pieces, for helping a couple of damsels in distress offer an entertaining program to the club.
Muriel Moore and Mary Jane Truster then served everyone apple cake dripping with nuts and warm browned butter glaze with a curl of whipped cream and a glass of fresh apple cider, refreshments that were much appreciated on that cool, damp, autumn evening.
