Local DAR chapter met at Elks Club

The Rushville Chapter of the DAR met Dec. 9 at the Rushville Elks Club. A delicious lunch was enjoyed by 17 members and two guests. Lisa Winship, regent, opened the meeting with the ritual.

Pat Carrigan introduced John Saxon, who gave a very informative program on making mandolins. He showed two beautiful models he had made. One was an A model and the other a more complicated S model. Saxon uses spruce and curly maple. He bends the maple by damping it and bending it over a hot pipe. The top and bottom are carved. They are thicker in the middle graduating down to a thinner thickness and on the edges are carved a little thicker. The finish has several coats and is hand-buffed to achieve a beautiful surface. Saxon played two selections for the group.

The President General’s message was given by Kristin Hass. The treasurer reported, as did the secretary. The flag minute was given by Pat Carrigan and Linda Clarkson read the Indian report. The group voted to renew the Heritage Quest subscription at the Rushville Public Library. It was reported that 34 Christmas trees had been presented to Mary Ann Hughes for veterans. Members were reminded of the 100th anniversary of the Rushville Chapter. A celebration will be held at the Rush County Courthouse on April 11.
