The Rushville BPW says good-bye
The Rushville Business & Professional Women’s Club/BPW met May 20 at the Dutch Mill Restaurant for its last meeting. Present were 11 members and associates, two past members, two guests from Connersville and four from Shelbyville along with two Working Woman Scholarship winners and five members of Lela Self’s family to help her celebrate her 80th birthday. The meeting started with Michele Gettinger announcing the two scholarship winners, Kara Scheidler and Ronda Sweet. Both were presented certificates and gave a brief overview of their plans for their additional education.
After the excellent buffet, the meeting resumed with introductions, past minutes and the treasurer’s report. Ellie Ellis presented a moving tribute to Merrilyn Lower and then several present gave their memories of Merrilyn. She will be missed by many.
With an update on the national merger/vote and state convention as well as an update on the newly forming social club, we came to the Foundation report and the President’s report for the year. A recommendation was made for the disbursement of monies in the treasury. After much discussion, a motion was made and money will be given to MainSource Bank for the Reality Store® program to be given at BRMS in the future as well as to the Rush County Community Foundation BPW Fund; the Rush County Cancer Fund started by Gene and our own Mable Smith and to the Boys & Girls Club.
All members and associates were given commemorative certificates by President Glenda Smith. The next district No. 7 meeting will be at 6:30 p.m. June 29 at Cagney’s in Shelbyville. Birthday cake was served for Lela’s birthday, which was also this night. And after one last drop of the gavel, the group joined hands and sang the Emblem Benediction for our deceased member Karen Vogel.
For the history buffs and genealogy fans, those present were Avis Brown and Mable Smith (both 50-plus year members), Rita Emsweller, Pat Springman, Jane Fry, Tianne Ripberger, Michele Gettinger, Ramona Wilkinson, Ellie Ellis, Lela Self and Glenda Smith. Lela’s family present included Brenda Dean, Terry VanNatta, Joanie Irwine, Julie and Meghan Allen. Jean Risch and Zada Hall were there from the Connersville LO. Gayle Henderson, Theresa Adams, Mary Alice Secrest and Jane Myers were present from the Shelbyville LO. Lil Miller and Laura Seufert, who are former BPW members, also joined us for the evening.
The Rushville BPW was formed Feb. 25, 1929 and will officially disbanded May 31, 2009 after an 80-year history of women helping women through education, advocacy and information. After many community projects through the years, BPW hopes to be remembered for the Reality Store® and our Working Women scholarships – both of which will be continuing after BPW is gone through MainSource Bank and the Rush County Community Foundation. It was a great 80 years and we would not have missed it for the world!
