Mini Relay is Saturday - corrected

RUSHVILLE —

Dear Editor: The committee for this year’s Relay for Life would like to thank everyone who participated in this year’s event. Although this seems a little late, it is just delayed, as is our event. We started the year with our kick-off in early February with the New Salem Lions Club and their generous donation. This has been a partnership that we have valued over the years and look forward to maintaining in the future. Together with the Lions Club, all the corporate sponsors and the hard work by all team members, we pulled together to raise just over $55,000. The morning of Relay dawned gloomy and rainy, but we remained firm to our commitment to carry on. This would not have been possible without everyone pitching in to clear out the inches of water in the shelter house. There were numerous men and women shoveling gravel, sweeping and squeegeeing water and trying to open drains. We appreciate all you did and there are too many to mention by name. After the decision was made to delay opening by two hours, the rain stopped and we were blessed with a few hours of sunshine. Spirits remained good all day as we enjoyed food, fun, games and family. One of the most inspiring moments of the day was the butterfly release and the survivor laps. We had a total of 55 survivors register that day despite the rainy conditions. As the weather threatened safety of our participants, we as a committee had to make a difficult decision - whether or not to call our event. The thought of people who are fighting cancer do not get to take the rainy days off kept playing through our minds, so if it had just been rain we would have stayed the course. However, with the threat of lightening and high winds we decided that we just could not risk staying. That is what led to our next decision - a Mini Relay! We again gathered in Memorial Park to celebrate our survivors, support those fighting and remember those we have lost. Last Saturday, July 10, from 4 to 10 p.m., we had more food, fun and games. Then starting at 9 p.m. we held our luminary service with John Wilson as our speaker. We also lined the track with the luminaries that have been purchased to honor our loved ones. We again want to thank all the support we have received from Rush County this year. As we look forward to next year, there are already great things in the works as we plan to celebrate the 10th Relay for Life of Rush County. Thank you again for all the support given to Relay for Life of Rush County over the past 9 years! Relay for Life of Rush County 2010 Committee

    Dear Editor:
Albert Schweitzer (Medical Missionary, 1875-1965) said, "When will we reach the point that hunting, the pleasure in killing animals for sport, will be regarded as a mental aberration?"

  • Parking on Jackson

In regards to Jackson Street being turned into a two-way street, I think it is time that the city stops people from parking the way they did when the restaurant was there. It is a hazard and makes it impossible to drive when there is oncoming traffic.
