Slow down for residents’ safety
Dear Editor:
My family and I moved to Rushville in July 2008. We moved from the Speedway area of Indianapolis to the country so that our children could grow up in a safe environment and attend excellent schools. We bought a small farm off of 50 W, not far from 900. We have three fenced-in pastures in which we have a cow, two horses and other animals. We have chickens, turkeys that run (around on) our farm because we live in a rural area. We thought that our kids, dogs and chickens could play freely on our farm but we were wrong. What we failed to realize when we bought our home is that 50 W is a dangerous road.
People bypass 3 and take 50 so they do not receive a ticket from the State Police that post up on 3. There are several cars that go in excess of 60 miles per hour on our road.
How do I know that? I know that because we called the Rush County Sheriff’s office and they wrote tickets on our road for speeds of 71 and 74 miles per hour. One person that he caught was right in front of the school bus. My kids were standing by the road waiting to get on the bus when he flew by at 71.
I have stopped several cars on our road when they were speeding and asked them to slow down. I was told by one mother to keep my kids in the back yard! We have posted “Slow Please” signs and it seems a majority of the people ignore them. To the people that have slowed down, we greatly appreciate it. We should not have to worry daily if our kids are going to get hit going to the mailbox, if we are going to get hit mowing the yard by the road or how many of our chickens are going to get hit.
There is no reason for anyone to be speeding down 50 at all. I know that sometimes your mind wanders as you are heading to and from work or church and you lose track of your speed. But not all the time! It is a country road where families live. All I am asking is that people please be considerate of our family, our livestock, and the other families that live on this road and SLOW DOWN!
I would like to thank the Rush County Sheriff’s office for patrolling our road and writing the tickets they have. I would also like to thank Sergeant Fields from the Indiana State Police for sending units down 50. With their help, hopefully we will make this a safer area to live in.
