Rush County youth workers, teachers, community leaders, youth ministers and others who impact the lives of children and youth can attend a free training event July 15 that will teach them to help children maximize their positive qualities and experiences on the road to successful adulthood.
The training will focus on the 40 developmental assets created by The Search Institute.
The assets are traits and qualities that can be developed in young people in order to help them make better choices and succeed in
life.
According to the Search Institute, the Assets represent the
relationships, opportunities and personal qualities that young people
need to avoid risks and to thrive.
The training will take place from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. July 15 at the Boys & Girls Club of Rush County, 1590 N. Sexton Street, Rushville.
The Indiana Youth Institute is hosting the event at no charge through a contract with Children's Bureau, Inc. and funding directed to this initiative from the Region 12 Regional Services Council.
A light lunch will be provided.
While there is no charge to attend the training, reservations are
required and can be made by calling the Boys 7 Girls Club of Rush County at (765) 932-2765.
This training will provide an overview of the assets material along
with data about Rush County children and youth.
Dennis Tooley, IYI's central Indiana field representative, will conduct the training. Tooley has been an assets trainer since 2002 and has conducted assets trainings throughout Indiana.
Assisting with the event will be Linda Henderson, IYI's southeast Indiana field representative, whose territory includes Rush County.

Waggener Pool opening Saturday and Sunday
In an update to this story, the City announced plans today to open Waggener Community Pool earlier than originally planned due to expected high temperatures over Memorial Weekend. Mayor Mike Pavey has asked that the pool be open this coming Saturday and Sunday. Hours will be noon to 6 p.m. Saturday and 1 to 6 p.m. Sunday. The pool will be closed on Monday for Memorial Day and Tuesday, and open again Wednesday, May 30, as was originally scheduled.

Why do young white women risk cancer to be tan?
A CDC report out this month found that nearly one in three white women aged 18 to 25 had used a tanning booth in the previous year.
