HAUBSTADT, Ind. (AP) — Police say suspected thieves fleeing from officers in southern Indiana were in a car that went out of control in a crash that killed one person.
State police say officers from Owensville and Fort Branch spotted men stealing anhydrous ammonia from the Warrick County Co-op about 12:30 a.m. Friday and tried to stop them as they left. The driver did not stop and caused a short pursuit that lasted until the crash near Haubstadt, about 15 miles north of Evansville.
One man was ejected from the car and killed. His name was not immediately released.
Another man fled from the crash and later surrendered to police with a broken hand. Investigators were uncertain who was driving the car.
Anhydrous ammonia is often stolen for use in the production of methamphetamine.
