Local VFW may lose charter

Time at hand for local veterans to again step up

RUSHVILLE — For 15 months, a dwindling number of local Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) members have met at the Robert Jenkins American Legion Post 150, 113 South Morgan Street, Rushville.

The venue change for meetings was necessitated following the closure of their former home, 230 East Water Street, Rushville in 2011 and the sale of the building in early 2012.

Due to what was deemed a lack of support at the time, Veterans of Foreign Wars Jackson-Cox Post 1541 ceased active operation locally nearly two years ago when the facility closed its doors.

Members met and addressed the decision to re-charter the local chapter. According to Rush County Veterans Services Officer Steve Land, during the Jan. 5 meeting Sgt. Major Bob Brown (USMC retired) submitted his resignation as local VFW Commander.

Land said Brown’s resignation was due to personnel reasons and that it put the existence of the local chapter in jeopardy.

“Sgt, Major Brown said he would stay on until a final decision was reached regarding the charter. However, once his resignation becomes official the National Chapter will pull our charter,” Land said Monday.

Veteran Ron Copple made a motion to dissolve the local VFW Post and return the Charter to the national chapter. He further recommended that the members donate all remaining funds to local veterans groups and charities.

His request is contingent on no other local veteran stepping forward to become commander on or before the Feb. 2 VFW meeting. The motion was seconded by Johnny Tompkins and passed.

“A final decision will be made at the February meeting to continue and recharter or to dissolve,” Land said.

Prior to the closure to the local Post, VFW members were an active part of the community, donating time, monies and energies to various community events and organizations.

Land and other local veterans are asking that all county veterans of the armed forces attend the February meeting and let their voices be heard.

Questions regarding the VFW or other veteran services can be directed to Land at (765) 56-5445.
