RUSHVILLE —
Rush County Highway Department employee Ryan Gardner, 29, radioed the county dispatch center around 5 p.m. Wednesday that he had just been involved in an accident on SR 44 west of Rushville,
Multiple departments responded to the intersection of the state road and CR 125W.
Rushville Police began redirecting traffic at the SR 44 and west First Street split as county units closed the state road at CR250W and redirected motorists to Old SR 44, around the accident scene,
Gardner had come to a stop on SR 44 in preparation of turning south onto Flatrock River Road when his 2010 Dodge Ram pickup truck was struck by a westbound 1999 Acura driven by Mark E. Leaser, 47, of Shelbyville.
“I took my eyes off the road for just a second and when I looked up there he was right In front of me, with his turn signal on. I tried to turn and avoid the collision but just didn’t make it,” Leaser said at the scene.
The force of the impact caused extensive damage to the driver’s side rear axle of Gardner’s vehicle, causing the truck to spin 90 degrees before coming to rest facing east and straddling the centerline.
As a result of the collision, the airbags in the Shelbyville man’s car deployed.
The investigation found that both drivers were properly restrained in their vehicles and that the use of seatbelts resulted in reducing the severity of their injuries.
Leaser was uninjured and refused additional medical attention after being checked at the scene.
Gardner was checked for unspecified head and neck pain and, as a precautionary measure, was transported to Rush Memorial Hospital.
A nearly three-mile of stretch of west SR 44 was closed for almost an hour during the investigation and clean up process.
Assisting at the scene were units from the Rushville Township Volunteer Fire Department, RCSD, RPD, Indiana State Police, RMH Ambulance and Davis Towing.

County beefs up computer security
During the most recent meeting of the Rush County Commissioners, Rush Count Sheriff Jeff Sherwood informed Bruce Levi, Mark Bacon and Ken Masters that the inmate population at the Rush County Jail continues to increase. According to Sherwood, 46 individuals are currently housed at the facility which is designed for 38 inmates.
