County receives DHS grant

Funding earmarked for shelter and food programs

RUSHVILLE — County EMA Director Chuck Kemker recently received notification that Rush County was chosen to receive supplement emergency food and shelter funding in the amount of $2,800.

Rush County was chosen by a national board that is a part of Homeland Security.

A local board is charged with making recommendations of agencies in need of additional funding assistance and distribution of the monies.

While the national board is comprised of representatives from the American Red Cross, Catholic Charities, National Council of the Churches of Christ in the U.S. A., The Salvation Army and United Way, the local board pulls members from both the public and private sector.

The local board must first define programs and organizations that meet certain criteria in regards to providing safe environments and food in the time of need.

Terms of the grant are that those agencies must:

Be private, voluntary not-for profit or units of the government.

Be eligible to receive  federal funds.

Have an existing accounting system.

Be non-discriminatory.

In the past have demonstrated the ability and capability to deliver food and shelter in the event of a emergency or time of need.

The deadline for organizations interested in applying for financial assistance funding through the grant is 4 p.m. Dec. 18.
