Special collection to include tires, document shredding

Clean Green Rush recycle news

RUSHVILLE — In an effort to curb illegal dumping, Clean Green Rush Director Carole Yeend recently announced a one-day special collection for tires and document shredding during the Nov. 3, tox-away day.

The first Saturday of each month, from 8 a.m. to noon, the Rush County Solid Waste District hosts a collection event at the local reclamation center, 225 South Smiley Avenue.

A one-time-only collection of tires will be held during the November collection. The tires may be off or on the rim and need to be relatively clean.

“The collection is in recognition of America Recycles Day,” Yeend said.

Rushville Consolidated High School FFA members will be on hand and assist city employees with the collection.

Once the collection is complete, Davis Towing and Recovery will take the tires to Leffler Tire in Peru. According to Yeend, the southern Indiana company recycles nearly 80 percent of collected tires for reuse while most companies simply grind the discarded tires which are then used as landfill cover.

A second part of the special collection is for unwanted documents. Shredding documents is a very effective means of guarding against identity theft.

Shares Shredding, Inc., will collect the documents in secure and locked containers that will in  turn be taken to their Shelbyville plant where they will be securely and properly shredded and disposed of.

“Because of their government and commercial contracts, Shares Shredding has procedure in place to ensure there are no security breaches,” Yeend said.

Both of these services are offered at no cost to Rush County residents.

During the monthly collection, usual items such as paints, stains, solvents, poisons, acids, automotive fluids and petroleum-based paints, electronic products, fluorescent lights and appliances will also be accepted.
