RUSHVILLE —
The Rushville Fire Department recently added a piece to what fire chief Chuck Jenkins and others say will be a state of the art firefighting training facility located on Smiley Avenue near the Rushville Animal Shelter. Jenkins and assistant fire chief Dennis Wayt agreed that the effort could not have been accomplished without the help of local businesses, organizations and individuals directly and indirectly affiliated with the fire department. The project began in May 2009 when the RFD became a part of the District Six Training Committee; District Six is comprised of 11 Indiana counties. According to Wayt, prior to the facility now located in Rushville there were four similar training locations and local firefighters were required to travel outside the county for many training exercises. That will soon not be the case. The initial thought was that the RFD would get a couple of cargo containers and modify them for training exercises to better prepare local firefighters. That small idea has grown to include four cargo containers with one set up on end that will be used for rappelling and tall building training. The first step in the lengthy process was to find a suitable location for a facility. Rushville City Utilities gave the RFD a parcel of land on the south end of Smiley Avenue. A number of other improvements were then made to the area, including leveling the property and adding gravel and lighting. “Probably 95 percent of everything we currently have, whether it is the structures themselves or other improvements, has been donated,” Wayt said. “Once this training facility is completed we can start training with other departments. We can have them here so that we can train more together in an effort to be better at what we do. This will strictly be used for smoke-filled search and rescue and ladder practice,” Jenkins said in referring to the new training facility.
