RUSHVILLE —
There is something special about this year's Rush County Fair, set for the week of June 20, in Rushville. Jennie Tague, RCHS drama teacher, will be presenting another talented cast of Rushville Consolidated High School students in the annual Briar Patch production at the end of fair week Ñ June 23, 24 and 25 instead of during the July 4 holiday.
"This will be the first time we have not performed during July 4th, but it will be even more convenient for the community. They can be entertained either before or after attending the festivities our wonderful fair has to offer. It's just a short hop across the street to the Laughlin Center, and it will be a nice way for family and friends to sit down a while, relax, cool off, and enjoy being entertained," Tague said.
What is now known as the Briar Patch Players were organized in 1966 by former RCHS drama teacher Marcia Blair at the behest of the late Bob Waggener to perform at the Homer Arts and Crafts Festival.
Initially, they were called the "Slabtown Players" after the Homer area.
After the demise of the Homer Festival, the group eventually changed its name to the Briar Patch Players and performed in other places, including a tent on the grounds of Memorial Park, before moving into the Laughlin Center for the Performing Arts on the RCHS campus.
The shows feature spoofs of local, national and international news events, told with great humor, and a lot of music.
The closing of each performance honors the graduating seniors.
Tague and her students are working diligently to pull together the script, well aware the shows are quickly approaching.
Tague said that although the script is a big challenge each year, she derives a lot of pleasure from seeing it unfold on stage.
"This year we will be taking you through the ever-changing road construction work going on in our community as well as recaps of other events that have taken place this past year," she added.
Show times are 5 and 7 p.m. June 23 and 24; Saturday, June 25, there will be three shows - at 3, 5 and 7 p.m.
