SADD kicks into high gear as Spring break nears

RUSHVILLE — Students Against Destructive Decisions (S.A.D.D.) members at Rushville Consolidated High School are taking a proactive stance when it comes to keeping students safe while on spring break.

In recent years, local S.A.D.D. members have won national attention for their ability to enlighten and inform students on the importance of making good decisions and this year is no exception. With spring break just days away, this year’s aim is to stress the importance of not being distracted when driving.

According to current RCHS faculty member and S.A.D.D. sponsor Judy Hatfield, each year more and more students take to the road, thus increasing the possibility of life-changing accidents.

Hatfield said that electronic devices such as cell phones, iPads and iPhones can create serious distractions for young and inexperienced drivers, escalating the potential for a serious accident.

Spring break for RCS students begins Monday; this week at RCHS, S.A.D.D. is hosting a number of activities aimed at gaining the attention of student drivers in an attempt to discourage distracted and impaired driving while encouraging responsible driving habits.

Monday, students used a “texting and driving” simulator to see firsthand the dangers of distracted driving.

During another activity, students had the opportunity to operate a motorized cooler while wearing “Fatal Vision Goggles,” which simulate being impaired.

Automobile crashes are the leading cause of deaths among 15 to 20 years olds. To drive home the importance of safe and sober driving, the Indiana Criminal Justice Institute has partnered with S.A.D.D. chapters throughout the state to offer free traffic safety program instruction with one goal in mind, to save lives.
