RUSHVILLE —
James K. Towels, 18, of Rushville, escaped serious injury in an accident on CR 200W Thursday night.
Shortly after 10:30 p.m., Towels collided with a mailbox and a RushShelby pole. His vehicle then traveled more than 200 feet with the broken pole on top of it before coming to rest in a combined bean field nearly 800 feet from the initial impact.
Following the accident, Towels exited his vehicle and began walking north on the county road. A passerby found him nearly a quarter mile from the accident scene and called 911.
The call resulted in emergency responders from the Rush County Sheriff’s Department, Anderson Township Volunteer Fire Department, RMH Ambulance and others responding to the 6400 block of South CR 200W.
RCSD deputy Doug Keith said Towels was behind the wheel of a 1992 Chevrolet Camero traveling north on CR 200W when he left the east side of the road and struck a mailbox. The vehicle continued its path of travel for nearly 40 yards before striking a RushShelby Energy pole.
“The driver over-corrected and struck a utility pole. The top of the pole fell on the vehicle and the vehicle traveled nearly 200 feet before the pole fell off the vehicle. The car then traveled another 100 yards before coming to rest,” the deputy said.
As medical personnel began assisting the Rushville man the property owner arrived on the scene and told investigators that he did not hear anything but saw the lights in his field and came to find out what was going on.
Following treatment at the scene by medical personnel from ATVFD and RMH Ambulance, Towels was transported to Rush Memorial Hospital for unspecified injuries.
Keith said the driver was fortunate his injuries were not more severe.
