Chorale concerts Saturday and Sunday

Everyone involved with the Armed Forces in the community and surrounding areas is invited to celebrate with the Rush County Chorale and Children’s Choir Saturday and Sunday the Laughlin Center.

Saturday’s concert will begin at 7:30 p.m. and Sunday’s concert at 2:30 p.m.

Veteran and persons in the military attending the concert are encouraged to wear their uniform.

The concert theme is “He Is Risen” and both choirs will be singing “A Tribute to the Armed Services,” an arrangement by Lloyd Larson. A brass ensemble will perform with the choirs.

“It is exciting to have such talented individuals accompany us. I think the audience will thoroughly enjoy it,” Chorale director David Doyle said.

The adult choir will open the concert singing “Jenny Rebecca” a capella, written by Carol Hall and arranged by Clair T. McElfresh.

The women’s section will sing “Thousand Cherubs in a Choir,” written by Franz Schubert and arranged by Linda Spevacek.

The men’s section will sing “Climbin’ Up the Mountain Children,” arranged by William Henry Smith.

The Children’s Choir is performing three numbers: “Rock-A-My Soul,” a traditional spiritual arranged by Kirby Shaw; “Shenandoah,” an American folk song arranged by Brad Printz; and “Joy in Jerusalem,” a medley celebrating the promise of peace arranged by Phyllis A. Wolfe.

The students will sing in Hebrew, Palestinian and Chassidic.

The combined choirs will be singing three Easter anthems including “Risen Alleluia!,” by Allen Pote; “Risen Today,” written by Lyra Davidica and Charles Wesley/arranged by Douglas E. Wagner; and “Christ the Lord Is Risen Today,” written by Charlotte Lee and Charles Wesley/arranged by Douglas E. Wagner.

Also especially noteworthy is the brass ensemble that has taken the time to rehearse and commit to performing with the Chorale: Tom and Terri Ewigleben, an extremely talented musical couple.

Terri plays trumpet and is a Rushville native, graduating from RCHS and ISU. She is a music teacher at Robey Elementary School in Clermont. Her 60-voice choir recently was selected to perform at the Wayne Township Talent Show at Ben Davis High School. She has also served as the principal trumpet of the Lafayette Symphony Orchestra for over 25 years and has performed with all of the major symphonies in Central Indiana and with the Billings, Montana Symphony Orchestra.

Tom also graduated from ISU and has performed with many of the major symphonies in Central Indiana. He leads a jazz orchestra called “The West Winds Big Band.” Tom plays trombone and is involved with a trombone quartet called “The 4Bones4Him,” which performs at several Indianapolis area churches, and a small jazz group called “The Jazz Torino.” He is also a trombonist and arranger for “The Park Avenue Band” and regularly adjudicates for the Indiana State School Music Association for both solo and ensemble contests and the ISSMA Annual Jazz Festivals. Tom recently retired from serving as band director for an inner city school in Indianapolis.

The Ewigleben’s have been married over 27 years and have two sons: Trevor, a junior at Anderson University, and Ty, a senior at Brownsburg High School. They both sing and play the trumpet.

T.R. Campbell, tuba player, is in his ninth year as band director for Rushville Consolidated High School. He and his wife, Heather, became proud parents 10 months ago.

Heather is band director for Rushville Elementary School.

T.R. received his undergraduate degree from ISU where he was drum major for the Marching Sycamores and student director of Basketball Bands.

T.R. and his wife have previous experience singing in the Chorale.

Professor John Huntoon plays trombone and holds degrees from Millikin University, Decatur, Ill., and Bowling Green State University, Bowling Green, Ohio.

He is the director of low brass, brass ensembles and jazz ensemble at Anderson University and serves as assistant director of the university’s Wind Ensemble. He is principal trombonist with the Anderson Symphony Orchestra and the Lafayette Symphony Orchestra. He has played for artists such as Ray Charles, Sandi Patti and the Moody Blues.

Professor Huntoon also has performed with the Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra, Indianapolis Chamber Orchestra, Evansville Philharmonic and Busselli-Wallerab Jazz Orchestra. He co-founded and plays trombone with the Keynote Brass Quintet and can be heard on its recording, “Reflections.”

Tickets for this weekend’s shows are available at the Rushville Pharmacy, King’s Family Bookstore and from any Chorale member.
