Most folks enjoy receiving gifts on their birthdays and the Rushville Public Library is no exception. The staff has taken it one step farther and is giving as well as receiving during the centennial celebration.
The library is hosting a daily gift drawing and has a gift tree near the main desk.
Patrons can take a “leaf” from the tree and donate funding for the item listed to the local facility. Some of the “gifts” include books, DVDs, CDs, Preschool and Story Time programming, summer reading program, general programming, furniture fund, ink cartridges, love seat and lounge chair for reference area.
The 100 Days of Giving project is going well. The jar for entries is full of name slips.
“The big thing we're doing anniversary-wise is having 100 days of 100 gift giveaways. We started on March 4 and are giving away a prize every day until June 11,” director Sue Otte explained. “We still need patrons to come in and register to win.”
The idea for giving gifts to patrons came from a patron.
“Sherry Owen heard about our 100th anniversary and gave a basket of beauty products to board member Tim Yazel for us,” the director said. “She thought we could have a drawing for it or use if for a door prize. The idea blossomed from there. Why not a giveaway each day for 100 days leading up to our anniversary date?”
To be eligible, visitors to the library at Third and Morgan Streets in Rushville write their names and phone number on a piece of paper and put it in a big jar on the front desk.
She commended the local merchants who have donated prizes.
“So far we’ve had very nice responses from businesses and organizations. Those who cannot give something for a prize have given us a donation to help buy prizes and to help with other special events coming up this year,” the director noted.
Another feature of the centennial is the changing display in the display case just inside the front entrance. Currently it’s highlighting the 1930s.
An Open House is slated for June 13. The times will be announced later.
