Saturday will mark the 12th consecutive year St. Patrick’s Day will be celebrated locally with shamrocks, leprechauns and a parade with floats. The only difference is that it will arrive four days early and will be celebrated Saturday instead of Wednesday, the 17th.
The three founding members of the local public celebration — Dan Shanahan, Brian Sheehan and John McCane — and a host of others, now head a variety of activities that have benefited many local charities over the years.
The gathering among friends to acknowledge Irish ancestry, sing Irish songs and share family stories has grown to include the entire community.
Festivities will kick-off with the annual 3 p.m. parade down Main Street and will feature this year’s Miss St. Patrick’s Day Princess as well as a number of others: some walking and others on floats. Those not participating in the parade are encouraged to turn out and cheer as the procession passes by.
The parade route will travel south from the Main Street Christian Church parking lot, 615 North Main Street, to Third Street then east to the Knights of Columbus, 227 East Third Street.
The public is invited to participate and should be at Main Street Christian Church at 2:30 p.m.
A limited number of tickets that will get patrons into the Knights of Columbus for the evening activities are still available. Anyone wishing to purchase a ticket may call Sheehan (938-5030), McCane (932-3905) or Shanahan (938-5802).
Anyone not able to make the event, but wishing to make a donation, should contact any of the organizers and they will make arrangements to collect your donation.
Proceeds from this year’s event will be shared with the Boys & Girls Club of Rush County, Riverside Park Summer Concert Series, Rush County Veterans Association, Changing Footprints and the Heart of Rushville.
Again this year, a “Paddy Wagon” will be available take individuals home.
