Several local businesses, schools, organizations and citizens attended a recent meeting to gather information and plan for a local celebration of Earth Day 2010.
Earth Day originated in 1970 as a means to instill awareness and stress the need for a greater appreciation of the environment.
Since that time the annual event has been held April 22 each year.
The grassroots environmental effort has resulted in a number of laws being enacted by Congress since the inaugural event including the Clean Air Act and the creation of the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA).
Locally, the group met to share ideas on how to celebrate Earth Day 2010.
Plans discussed included a day to spruce up the downtown area and a community yard sale.
Rush County Commissioner Ken Masters announced that 100 white pine trees have been ordered and will be planted at various locations.
The purpose of the meeting was to solicit ideas and plans from various sources and organizations with the hope of tying various activities into a month-long local Earth Day 2010 celebration.
