Accident sends two to hospital

RUSHVILLE — The report of a two-vehicle injury accident shortly after 8:30 p.m. Sunday resulted in emergency responding units from multiple counties converging on the 8700 block of South CR 1000W.

Rush County deputy sheriff Terry Drake said two vehicles cresting a small hill on the county road collided and resulted in the drivers of both vehicle being transported to Major Hospital in Shelbyville for what were described as non-life threatening injuries.

As a southbound 1997 Dodge Caravan, driven by Jerry L. Moore, 55, of Waldron crested a small hill on the rural road it met a northbound 2001 Honda driven by Logan M. Callahan, 19, of Greensburg.

Drake said both drivers had little time to react prior to colliding.

Following impact, Moore’s vehicle left the west side of the country road and traveled nearly 60 feet prior to coming to rest. The Greensburg man’s vehicle traveled nearly 120 feet in the east side ditch before coming to a stop.

A front seat passenger in the Moore vehicle was uninjured and was able to exit the vehicle prior to responders arrival; Moore sustained unspecified neck and arm pain.

Personnel from the Waldron Volunteer Fire Department removed the driver’s side door to gain access to Moore.

Following treatment at the scene by medical personnel from Shelby County, Moore was transported to Major Hospital in SHelbyville. The full extent of his injuries was unknown at press time. Callahan sustained an unspecified left arm injury; following treatment at the scene he was also transported to Major Hospital.

Both vehicle sustained extensive damage and were towed from the scene.

No citations were issued.

Responding to the accident were units from the RCSD, Shelby County Sheriff’s Department, WVFD, Manilla Volunteer Fire Department.

    During the most recent meeting of the Rush County Commissioners, Rush Count Sheriff Jeff Sherwood informed Bruce Levi, Mark Bacon and Ken Masters that the inmate population at the Rush County Jail continues to increase. According to Sherwood, 46 individuals are currently housed at the facility which is designed for 38 inmates.
