RUSHVILLE —
'57 Chevys, Bobbie socks, pill box hats, Elvis vs. Pat Boone, short shorts on basketball players, Vietnam, The Platters on the juke box, the twist, Miller's Drive-in, the Teen Canteen - those are just some of the memories from the days the kids from the Class of 1961 ruled the school.
For many, it seems like just yesterday.
On June 25, they will come together for their (hard to believe by most accounts) 50th reunion.
The classes of 1961 and 1986 will be honored during the 54th Annual RHS/RCHS Alumni Banquet June 25 in the cafeteria at Rushville Elementary School West.
Doors open at 5 p.m. and the banquet will be at 6 p.m.
The cost is $14 in advance or $17 at the door. Don't delay, because reservations are due by Monday, with names of guests needed so name tags can be prepared.
Please send reservations to john@johnmccane.com or mail to RHS/RCHS Alumni Association, P.O. Box 134, Rushville, IN 46173. You may also call John Gridley at 765-932-4911 or Cinda Pavey at 765-561-3666 with questions about this year's alumni banquet.
The Class of 1961 has planned a weekend-long celebration for their 50th reunion.
Festivities begin at 5 p.m. Friday, June 24 with a cookout at the home of Verlin Custer, 1698 E CR 800N, Rushville.
A class visit will be from 1 to 4 p.m. June 25, again at the home of Verlin Custer, followed by the Alumni banquet at 6 p.m. at RES West.
A reception will follow for the Class of 1961 at 8:30 p.m. at the American Legion. Breakfast is planned for the class on June 26 at the Park Restaurant in Mays.
Golf will be available for the 50th celebration on the mornings of June 24 and 25.
For more information on the 1961 reunion contact Libby Smith at smith.elizabeth61@gmail.com or Anna Karen Pennington at rushcountyd@frontier.com. Libby Smith may be reached at 932-5381.
The RHS/RCHS Alumni Association banquet will be catered by Susie Odum. Members of the classes of '61 and '86 will be recognized.
Three alumni awards will be presented including the Senior Award, the Junior Award and the "Porky" Wainwright community service award. The service award is named for the late Maurice "Porky" Wainwright, a 1925 graduate of RHS.
"Mr. Wainwright was a long-time keeper of the records of the association. He did everything pre-computer and kept everything by hand and on name cards for many, many years. He was an invaluable asset to the association for many years," John McCane, association vice president, said. "The senior award is named for the late Bob Waggener. Bob was the original president of the alumni association in 1958. He is a 1934 graduate and was involved for 50 years with the alumni association. The junior award began in 1982," McCane added.
The association will unveil a new website soon that will help track alumni and allow them to log on and update their own information. If someone didn't get an invitation, they should e-mail John McCane at john@johnmccane.com.
The alumni association depends on the annual dues of $10 from members to support their activities. Seventeen years ago, the RHS/RCHS Alumni Association Scholarship Award was created. This year, the association will award three scholarships.
Three $1,000 scholarship winners will be awarded by the association to Hayli Valentine, daughter of Kevin and Carol Valentine; Taylor Edwards, daughter of Mary Edwards; and Kayla Springmire, daughter of Mark and Pam Ford. Alumni are encouraged to make a contribution to the Alumni Scholarship Fund.
The "Thanks for the Memories" endowed education fund was also established by the late Bob and Emy Waggener through the Rush County Community Foundation.
Officers of the alumni association include John Gridley from the Class of 1969, president; John McCane from the Class of 1983, vice president; Cinda (Ellis) Pavey from the Class of 1976, treasurer; Anita (Spurlin) Simpson from the Class of 1971, secretary; and Winona (Smith) Evans from the Class of 1945, historian. The board of directors also includes Paul Barada Jr., Class of 1990; Dawn Moran, Class of 1976; David Payne, Class of 1983; and Jim Reece, Class of 1990.
