Omnicity to create local jobs

The 201 Building in downtown Rushville was the site of a major economic development announcement Wednesday morning.

Indiana Governor Mitch Daniels was joined by representatives from Omnicity Corporation, Rushville Mayor Merv Bostic and Rush County Economic and Community Development Director Brad Buening in announcing that Omnicity, a rural broadband provider, plans to expand its operations in Rush County, creating an estimated 100 new jobs by 2012.

Omnicity, which began doing business in Rushville, now provides broadband access to more than 30 Indiana counties.

The plan announced Wednesday calls for the company to invest $2.5 million toward wireless infrastructure and the construction of a new corporate office in Rushville’s North Industrial Park.

The governor said this is good news for Rush County, noting that improved technology in a rural area such as Rush County makes it more attractive to new start-up companies as well as those looking to expand or relocate.

“This makes Rush County even more attractive for jobs and growth,” Daniels said.

In a prepared statement, Omnicity CEO and Rushville resident Greg Jarman stated: “We believe we are at the perfect place with the perfect plan at the perfect time in our efforts to reach all of the rural areas with broadband services that are much needed for economic development, education, health care and smart-grid technology. ... (This) is an exciting time for us.”

Omnicity plans to begin hiring customer service specialists, managers and field service personnel in October. Construction of the company’s new facility in North Industrial Park is expected to begin in 12 to 18 months.

The Indiana Economic Development Corporation offered Omnicity up to $25,000 in training grants and will provide the city of Rushville with a $110,000 grant to assist with off-site infrastructure improvements needed for this project.

The city is expected to provide additional property tax abatement at the request of the ECDC.

“We are proud to have Omnicity in Rush County,” Mayor Bostic said. ‘We hope this isn’t the last time we’ll be making this kind of announcement.”
