RUSHVILLE —
Following nearly three months without one, the Carthage Town Board recently announced that current Knightstown Chief of Police Danny Baker is the town’s new marshal.
Baker assumed his duties earlier this week and will work 80 hourly monthly.
The hiring follows the tumultuous six month tenure of Clint Ellis, who served as marshal on an interim basis until being relieved of his duties in December, 2012.
The Carthage Marshal is the only paid officer in the rural community.
Applications are currently being accepted by Baker and the town board for deputy marshals.
Baker is no stranger to law enforcement, having served as chief of police in nearby Knightstown for a number of years.
His hiring was welcomed by Rush County Sheriff Jeff Sherwood.
“I think he is a very good choice for the town of Carthage. I have known him for a number of years,” Sherwood said.
The town of Carthage is located in Ripley Township and sits along the Big Blue River in the northwestern part of Rush County.
According to the 2010 census, the rural community has a population of 927.
Since the release of Baker’s predecessor, Rush County deputies have responded to the calls for assistance in the area; although they will still respond when needed, Baker’s hiring will allow the community to have more consistent coverage and a better law enforcement presence.
