RUSHVILLE —
Rushville is heating up for this Friday’s “First Friday” event. This summer, downtown merchants joined together to create a monthly event called First Friday. First Friday has evolved into a unique shopping and entertainment experience to draw people downtown. First Friday will also continue in the coming year. Ryan Berkemeier, Chamber of Commerce board president and owner of Public Paint and Wallpaper, is spreading the word that this First Friday event (Sept. 3) will be better than ever. Merchants are planning specials for the day and many will be open extended hours until 7 p.m. D.J. Kevin Green will be playing from 4 to 7 p.m. (weather permitting). The day and evening will also include sidewalk sales, food, arts and crafts and more. The area will be set up for dancing in the street, Berkemeier said, and there will be plenty of parking. Merchants will be registering patrons and visitors throughout the day and evening to win Colts tickets and Indiana University and Purdue University football tickets. Berkemeier said the theme for this Friday is “Tackle the Savings.” With the first Lions home game kicking off at 7 p.m. that evening, First Friday downtown will have a tailgating feel to the activities with hot-dogs grilled during the lunch and dinner hour. The Colts tickets are provided by RushShelby Energy and are for the Colts vs. Chiefs game Oct. 10. This will make the third month for First Friday activities and Berkemeier is optimistic about crowds continuing to grow and more people coming downtown to take advantage of special savings and to enjoy entertainment during the day and evening. “The first one was kind of slow, the second one got a little momentum and now we’re ready to drive it home,” he said. More than a dozen stores have joined together, many with new fall items to showcase in addition to store specials and special craft areas being added on the sidewalks by local artisans. “We want to continue this event after the construction ends with something different each month,” Berkemeier added. “This will be something good people can feel good about.” The last Saturday in September, Sept. 25, will feature RushFest, which is an even larger annual event with kids activities, a farmer’s market, vintage race cars and more. This will also “be a good time for all to come down,” Berkemeier said. Organizers for the First Friday event say that a key reason to shop here is because Rushville merchants offer great customer service when you come downtown.News
