Varsity Scholars: A unique team

RUSHVILLE — What team has no uniform, doesn’t practice on a field, court or pool and doesn’t require a weigh-in? Can’t think of one? Well we can – they’re called Varsity Scholars and don’t let the lack of team paraphernalia or required practices fool you! They are very much a team in every sense of the word. This team works at attaining a whole other set of points that makes them undefeated in every way.

Because of the firm belief in the value of academic excellence and the importance of providing an incentive for “good grades,” the Varsity Scholars program was created. The first year Varsity Scholars came into being was during the 1992-1993 school year. That year 52 qualifying Seniors flew to Freeport (Bahamas) for the day. Two qualifying Seniors elected to receive a savings bond instead of the trip.

The Varsity Scholars program recognizes Freshman and Sophomores that have maintained a 3.5 GPA (cumulative) with a Certificate of Recognition during the annual RCHS Honors Day Program. Juniors and Seniors must maintain a 3.25 GPA (cumulative). Juniors are recognized with a Certificate of Recognition during the annual RCHS Honors Day Program and Seniors are afforded the ultimate recognition of a day trip to a selected destination (or they receive a $100 cash award). Students must apply to the program each year and will be subject to review of their citizenship record. Items considered include attendance and discipline.

And now, 20 years since inception, the Varsity Scholars program continues to grow and flourish. This anniversary year will find 42 Seniors qualifying for a day drip to Ft. Myers Beach, Florida on April 24th. The cost of this trip is paid for strictly by donations (no school funds are used). This year the estimated cost is $420 per student. In 2012 fifty four (54) financial sponsors stepped up to say well done and make the Varsity Scholar trip possible. Without their most generous gifting this trip would not be possible. While their gift of dollars is important, we are keenly aware that they too value the efforts put forth by this team of academic achievers.

 As of this writing the Varsity Scholars program is approximately $1,500 short for the 2013 trip. “We are confident this community will step up and help us make this trip a reality. The ultimate goal is to build a substantial cushion toward funding not only current but future Varsity Scholar trips. We think this program is a wonderful way to recognize our Seniors who have worked tirelessly toward academic excellence,” stated Varsity Scholars Co-Chairs Diane Personett and Julie Wainwright. If anyone would like to donate funds for this year’s trip, please send a check to the Varsity Scholars Program care of RCHS, 1201 Lions Path, Rushville, IN 46173. To ensure the future of the Varsity Scholars program, please send your gift to the Rush County Community Foundation, 117 North Main Street, Rushville, IN 47173. Be sure to indicate your gift is for the Varsity Scholars Fund.

    The Local Coordinating Council (LCC) recently met Rush County’s new Community Corrections director Ashley Stevens.
    According to Stevens, Community Corrections is funded by the Indiana Department of Correction with aspirations that it will, in time, be self-funded.

  • FSA announces restart of America’s largest conservation program

    Julia A. Wickard, State Executive Director of USDA’s Farm Service Agency (FSA) in Indiana announced FSA is currently conducting Conservation Reserve Program (CRP) signups for both general and continuous CRP. The General Signup began yesterday, May 20, 2013, and continues through June 14. Sign-up for continuous CRP began on May 13 and will continue through Sept. 30, 2013.

    During the most recent meeting of the Rush County Commissioners, Rush Count Sheriff Jeff Sherwood informed Bruce Levi, Mark Bacon and Ken Masters that the inmate population at the Rush County Jail continues to increase. According to Sherwood, 46 individuals are currently housed at the facility which is designed for 38 inmates.
