The Rushville City Council met Jan. 15, opening with a public hearing on a planning grant for the Rushville Public Library to kick off building improvements.
Paula Hartwell, from Administrative Resources, gave a brief description of the project. Hartwell said the purpose of this grant is to benefit low and moderate income persons. The planning would be conducted by Odle McGuire Shook, architects.
They were established in 1916, with Rushville native William McGuire as one of the original founders. Odle McGuire and Shook served as one of the original architects of the Rushville Public Library in 1930.
Currently serving on the library board are president Lou Starkey, vice president Laura Steenstrup, treasurer Keith Perin, secretary Jennifer Harpring and members Rob Hadley, Denise Payne and Tim Yazel. Julie Newhouse serves at board attorney.
Council members Brad Berkemeier and Craig Smith made the motion and second for the city to move forward with the grant and loan program to make restroom and lighting changes to the Rush County Senior Center.
The Rushville Fire Department reported that 59 applications were picked up to fill vacancies by March. Of those, 28 were returned with 19 applicants meeting the criteria. The agility testing was to be in January.
The Board of Public Works and Safety approved the Jan. 28 start date for new RPD officer Michael Garrish.
Council president Bob Bridges, who serves as the new D.A.R.E. officer in Rush County Schools, reported that he had started the program in all fifth grades this month.
“I appreciate the Mayor and the Chief of Police having enough confidence in me to run the program,” Bridges said.
The Parks Department reported that the annual Valentine’s Dance for BRMS will be 6 to 8 p.m. Feb. 8.
The new outdoor ice skating rink at Rushville Riverside Park Amphitheater is also open. Bring your own skates. Call the Park Department at 932-4146 for more information.
Animal Control has hired a part-time employee, Dan Herbert.
Mayor Pavey thanked those who attended the recent EMS meeting and the State of the City Address. He asked Council members if they would like to be involved in the next application for a stellar grant. Council agreed they would like to file an application or letter of intent.
The ECDC hiring process is continuing with a targeted hiring date of Feb. 15.
