Veterans remembered during local service

RUSHVILLE — A sparse crowd gathered shortly before 11 a.m. Saturday for a Veterans Day service at Veterans Memorial Bridge in North Veterans Memorial Park.

Sgt. Major Bob Brown (USMC, retired) greeted those in attendance and thanked the veterans representing various branches of the armed forces in attendance for their service to their country.

“We recognize that some veterans have given some to their country while some gave their all,” Brown said.

He continued by saying that currently there are roughly 22 million veterans alive.

“Some were drafted, some volunteered, some were men, some were women; regardless, they all served,” Brown said.

He then recognized Rush County resident and US Air Force veteran Marc Ellis and touched upon the airman’s contribution by saying that he piloted a B24 bomber during World War II before introducing Ellis’ son, Col. Greg Ellis. The younger Ellis, a former Rush County resident and Knightstown High School graduate, was the day’s keynote speaker.

Ellis gave a brief history of Veterans Day and thanked all those currently serving their country and those who served previously.

Rushville Mayor Mike Pavey also spoke at the event. He outlined a number of plans currently in the works to honor and remember veterans.

The brief service came to a close following a 21 gun salute and the playing of Taps.
