Operation Pull Over underway

RUSHVILLE — As additional motorists travel area roads in the coming weeks law enforcement personnel from the Rush County Sheriff’s Department and the Rushville Police Department are participating in a safe driving blitz known as Safe Family Travel.

According statistics recently released by Chief Deputy Duane Raab of the RCSD, during November 2011, 476 alcohol-related traffic accidents occurred on Indiana roads. Five of those accidents resulted in fatalities and during 415 of those incidents the driver and/or occupant were not restrained at the time of the collision.

The statistics also show that as a result of the crashes, 235 individuals were injured with 32 sustaining serious bodily injuries.

The 16-day safety blitz is an annual effort and combines high-visibility efforts on the part of deputies and city police to enforce seatbelt usage and remove impaired drivers from Rush County roads.

The bottom line, according to Raab, is click it or ticket and drive sober or get pulled over.

“During this Thanksgiving holiday, many more people are on the road traveling to visit friends and family. So whether you’re traveling across the country or just across town, one of the best ways to ensure a safe arrival is to always buckle up. If you plan to consume alcohol, designate a sober driver,” Raab said.

The deputy continued by saying that child passengers were also impacted during 2011 accidents on Hoosier roads.

During the previous 12 months, of the more than 5,000 children under the age of 15 involved in traffic accidents 3,951 were injured and 38 fatalities were reported.

Many of these injuries and deaths could have been prevented if drivers would just plan ahead. That is why Raab cautions all drivers that if they are not wearing seatbelt or you have child passengers who are not properly restrained they will be stopped and they will receive a ticket.

“If you are caught driving impaired, we will detect you and ultimately place you under arrest,” Raab said.

During 2011, the Rush County Sheriff’s Department was recognized by state officials for their efforts to remove drunk and impaired drivers from roads.

Individuals arrested for OWI (operating a motor vehicle while intoxicate) face not only stiff monetary fines but also the loss of driving privileges for up to 90 days and probation requirements of up to 12 months for first-time offenders.
