Tuesday storm causes problems

RUSHVILLE — Although spring is less than two weeks away, Old Man Winter reared his head Tuesday and deposited multiple inches of snow on Rush County.

The storm resulted in local schools being closed Wednesday and, as a number of motorists found, also made area roads difficult to navigate.

As temperatures fell to sub-freezing levels and driving conditions deteriorated Tuesday evening a number of slide-off and minor accidents were reported.

A Richmond man rolled his vehicle in the 10,000 block of South SR 3 shortly after 11:30 p.m. and the accident resulted in a section of the state road being closed for a short time.

Wednesday found multiple crews of city street, county and state highway department employees working to remove snow from area roads.

Some of the hardest hit areas were east of Rushville, as blowing snow made travel especially difficult.

As the winter storm moved east and out of the area it was replaced with warmer and more seasonable temperatures. With the warmer temperatures, concerns are again elevated regarding standing water on county roads.

Motorists are asked to reduce their speed.

It is further recommended that motorists not drive through standing water. If the road can not be seen due to high water, drivers should seek alternative routes of travel.

If stranded in high water, drivers and passengers should stay inside the vehicle and use a cell phone to contact law enforcement.
