The Heart of Rushville’s Farmers and Artisans Market will continue to offer locally grown and handmade goods until the final day of the 2010 season on Oct. 16. Whether you’re looking for fresh baked bread, cookies, and cinnamon rolls, fun and stylish jewelry, tie-dyed apparel, or customized works of art, and cornhole games, you’ll find it all on East Third Street from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturdays. On the homegrown side, pumpkins, and gourds grown locally at Sebastian Farm are just beginning to appear. Look for squash and mums to be offered shortly as well. “It’s never too early to start picking up your 2010 Christmas presents,” Market Master Mark Sloan said. “How about a handsome and practical gift, like a hardwood cutting board from master woodworker Joe Kimmell. Or for your lady football fans you can’t go wrong with a crocheted Colts purse from Denise Smith. Emmalee Hedrick will be glad to make you personalized garden stones, or see Ron Wilson for the best in handmade leather goods. Joyce Miller has herbal soaps, as well as interesting and delicious jelly and jam. These are just a few of the wide variety of quality, locally made and produced items you can find at the market. And you have the satisfaction of knowing that you are helping the local economy.” This is the second consecutive year that the City Council has authorized the closure of Third Street east from Main Street to the alley to provide a safe and secure environment for both patrons and vendors while at the market. There is plenty of free parking on Main Street as well as in the city lot behind Rushville Pharmacy. Waggener Pool opening Saturday and Sunday
In an update to this story, the City announced plans today to open Waggener Community Pool earlier than originally planned due to expected high temperatures over Memorial Weekend. Mayor Mike Pavey has asked that the pool be open this coming Saturday and Sunday. Hours will be noon to 6 p.m. Saturday and 1 to 6 p.m. Sunday. The pool will be closed on Monday for Memorial Day and Tuesday, and open again Wednesday, May 30, as was originally scheduled.

Why do young white women risk cancer to be tan?
A CDC report out this month found that nearly one in three white women aged 18 to 25 had used a tanning booth in the previous year. White women aged 18 to 21 went the most often, averaging 27.6 sessions per year—that’s over two sessions per month—while nearly 70 percent said they had gone at least 10 times in the last year.
