With the deadline for candidates to file for the 2012 primary now behind us, campaigns will be going into full swing before the May 8 election day.
The Rush County Election Board will mail primary absentee ballots to voters who have filed an application by March 24.
April 9 is the first day a voter may vote an absentee ballot before an absentee voter board in the office of the circuit court clerk at the Rush County Courthouse. April 9 is also the last day to register to vote in the primary election.
In the national race for president, Barack Obama stands alone on the Democrat ticket, seeking his second term, while Republican contenders in the primary continue to battle including Newt Gingrich, Ron Paul, Mitt Romney, Patricia Inez Sandifer and Rick Santorum.
In the U.S. Senate, Joe Donnelly is running unopposed on the Democrat ticket with Richard E. Mourdock taking on incumbent Richard G. Lugar, both Republicans.
Former U.S. Rep. Mike Pence and Jim Wallace are both seeking the Republican nod for governor of Indiana with John R. Gregg running on the Democrat ticket.
Looking to represent the U.S. House Sixth District, vacated by Pence in his bid for the governor's office, the field of candidates is crowded on both sides of the aisle.
Running for the U.S. Representative Republican spot are Don Bates Jr., Bill Frazier, Travis Hankins, John Hatter, Luke Messer, Joe Sizemore, Allen K. Smith II and Joseph S. Van Wye Sr. Lining up on the Democrat side are Dan Bolling, Bradley T. Bookout, Jim Crone, Susan Hall Heitzman and George T. Holland.
In State Senate District 42, incumbent Jean Leising has the Republican spot with no candidate filed on the Democrat ticket.
State Representative districts have been redrawn with new and vacant District 55 seeing four Republican candidates and one Democrat seeking their party's spot.
Previous district lines had Rep. Randy Frye serving parts of Rush County. He is now in District 67 and his district boundaries no longer include Rush County.
Republicans seeking the new District 55 seat include Sam Harvey, Bob White, Lora N. Williams and Cindy Meyer Ziemke. Running on the Democrat side is David (Dave) Moeller.
The northern end of the county will be in Indiana House District 54 with Thomas E. (Tom) Saunders running solo in the Republican spot and no candidate filed on the Democrat primary ballot. A candidate may later be appointed for the General Election on the Democrat ticket.
Running for Judge of the 65th Circuit Court in Rush County is David Edwin Northam on the Republican side with no candidate filed on the Democrat ticket.
Candidates running locally in Rush County include two Republicans vying for clerk of the circuit court: incumbent Debbie Richardson and challenger Deborah Adams.
Enjoying unopposed status in the primary are incumbent Mary Ann Beard for county auditor and former city council member Cindy Humphrey for county treasurer, both Republicans.
Filing for county coroner are John J. Todd, Republican, and Christy Mahan Hall, Democrat.
Incumbent Marvin L. Rees alone files for county surveyor on the Republican ticket.
Seeking the county commissioner middle district seat are Bruce W. Levi and Clifford Marlatt, both Republicans.
Running unopposed for county commissioner southern district is Mark Bacon, Republican.
Seeking three county council at-large seats are four Republicans, Thomas H. Barnes, Marvin Hedrick, Warren L. Norris and Charles Smith.

Waggener Pool opening Saturday and Sunday
In an update to this story, the City announced plans today to open Waggener Community Pool earlier than originally planned due to expected high temperatures over Memorial Weekend. Mayor Mike Pavey has asked that the pool be open this coming Saturday and Sunday. Hours will be noon to 6 p.m. Saturday and 1 to 6 p.m. Sunday. The pool will be closed on Monday for Memorial Day and Tuesday, and open again Wednesday, May 30, as was originally scheduled.

A CDC report out this month found that nearly one in three white women aged 18 to 25 had used a tanning booth in the previous year.
