RUSHVILLE —
During a recent LCC meeting, Melissa Hampton, school nurse for Mays Elementary School and coordinator for the Creating Positive Relationships program at RCS schools, gave a presentation on the successes and enrollment figures for the program during the current school year.
According to Hampton, the program is mandated by the state and fits into the criteria required by the LCC.
She continued by saying that currently there are roughly 420 students participating in the program at the middle school.
ÒIt is my understanding that each student is receiving the C & R criteria at Benjamin Rush Middle School and we are excited about that,Ó Hampton said.
She added that 45 RES East and 47 RES West students, 36 from Arlington Elementary School, 50 Milroy Elementary School students and 22 from Mays are also in the program.
ÒWe also have roughly 35 to 40 high school students that are enrolled in the Advance Child Development class participating, Hampton said.
The basic premise of the instruction is that if a student chooses risky behaviors they are also choosing the consequences that go along with that decision.
ÒIt is an awesome program and a lot more than simply was once deemed sex education. It addresses the importance of making positive choices and how to deal with peer pressure,Ó Hampton said.
Working from an annual budget of roughly $15,000, the LCC meets monthly with the exception of July and strives to make local schools and campuses safe and drug- and smoke-free environments.
Each month one organization that receives financial assistance from the LCC gives a presentation to members explaining how the financial backing assists them in meeting their needs to better students and Rush County Schools.
