Driver misses house, hits tree

RUSHVILLE — A Greensburg man escaped serious injury in a single vehicle accident Thursday evening.

Ricky McKinney, 21, was eastbound when he drifted off the south shoulder of the road. In an attempt to return to the eastbound lane he over-corrected, crossed the centerline and left the north side of the road.

After leaving the road a second time, McKinney was able to miss a utility pole before striking a small tree that lined the front yard of a residence at 7924 East U.S. 52. The truck managed to miss striking the nearby house and a row of trees.

After crossing a gravel driveway, the truck slammed into a tree head on and came to an abrupt stop.

“I was outside and saw the entire thing, He just shot through the yard and hit the tree. It sounded like a gun going off,” the home owner said.

McKinney was uninjured and able to remove himself from his vehicle prior to law enforcement’s arrival. After being checked out by medical personnel from RMH Ambulance he refused additional treatment.

“I looked up as I entered the curve and then looked in my mirror and was blinded by the sun. Next thing I knew I was in the ditch and I just cut the wheel back the other way. I guess I just lost it, but I tried to save it. I did not want to hit the house,” McKinney told investigating officer Daniel Meyer.

Assisting at the scene were units from the Rush County Sheriff’s Department, Glenwood Volunteer Fire Department, RMH Ambulance and Davis Towing.
