Food Check-out Week arrives

RUSHVILLE — This week marks 15 years members of the Farm Bureau Woman’s Leadership Committee will celebrate Food Check-out Week.

The effort began as a means for members to stress the importance of eating healthy with members offering tips to consumers to stretch their grocery dollars.

Nearly all consumers know that the cost of most things has increased in recent years, and proving a balanced and healthy meal is no exception. American’s currently spend an average of nearly 10 percent of their annual income on food, which means that from Jan. 1 to the third week of February each year represents the number of weeks of income it takes for a U.S. family to generate enough money to pay for a year’s worth of food.

That equates to a family working five weeks of each year to simply put food on the table.

The majority of food produced in America is grown on family-owned farms, with 98 percent of all farming operations being owned and operated by individuals and families.

Rush County Farm Bureau, Inc. Women’s Leader Marlene Fudge pointed out that Americans enjoy the safest and most abundant and affordable food supply in the world.

Fudge will be at the Rushville Kroger beginning at 4 p.m. Wednesday to help consumers find solutions to eating healthy on a stretched budget.

“On the National level, the AFB Women’s Leadership Committee staffs supermarket demonstrations for consumers to help them increase their knowledge of how to stay on a budget while purchasing healthy foods for their families,” Fudge said.

Americans fare better than many foreign counterparts in providing food for families: Japan pays roughly 15 percent of their income for food, China 35 percent for similar purchases.
