Students “smoked out” during fire drill
A combined effort between the Rushville Fire Department and Rushville Consolidated High School administrators resulted in a simulated but realistic fire drill Thursday afternoon.
Wayne Munson of the RFD said that in recent weeks other schools in the county have used a similar approach to see how well the evacuation drill in each school works in the event of a fire.
Munson said firefighters enter the school and set up a smoke machine, allowing to smoke to filter into the hallways.
Firefighters then watch the students and teachers actions to see how the process of exiting the building works.
Shortly after 2 p.m. smoke began filling high school hallways.
A few moments later, as firefighters monitored the situation, the alarm sounded as a substantial amount of smoke became visible.
Once the alarm sounded, students and factually exited the school in an orderly fashion.
According to firefighters, the drill went very smoothly and they were pleased with the results.
