School boundary changes discussed
The Rush County Board of School Trustees recently was given information about the elementary school realignment that is being proposed as a result of the construction of the two new elementary schools at Arlington and Milroy; the renovation of Mays; and the dividing of Rushville elementary school into two separate K-6 facilities.
With the exception of Mays all RCS elementary schools will be two section (two classrooms of each grade level) buildings. Mays will be a single section building.
In developing the proposed student enrollment figures consideration was given to balancing school enrollment by total number of students, percent of free and reduced lunch students and percent of students with special needs.
“These figures will never be exactly the same but should fall within acceptable limits,” RCS superintendent of schools Dr. John Williams said.
The preliminary realignment calculations have resulted in a distribution of students as follows.
Arlington: 294 students - 43.5% free/reduced lunch and 12.5% special education.
Milroy: 288 Students - 43.7% free/reduced lunch and 11.5% special education.
RES East: 334 Students - 65% free/reduced Lunch and 9.9% special education.
RES West: 335 Students - 65% free/reduced Lunch and 9.9% special education.
Mays: 142 Students - 42.5% free/reduced Lunch and 6.3% special education.
Existing elementary school boundaries will have to be altered from their current status in order to fill the buildings.
Dr. Williams said meetings will be held at each elementary school during the month of January for the purpose of presenting information to the public specific to each individual school as well as to respond to questions and comments from the public.
The Rush County Schools Board of School Trustees will take action on the proposed boundaries at their Feb. 2, 2010 meeting.
