Federal funds to pay for restoring covered bridge

MEDORA, Ind. (AP) — Jackson County officials say federal stimulus money will pay for restoring a 19th century wooden covered bridge in southern Indiana.

County highway superintendent Warren Martin says bids on the $1.9 million Medora Covered Bridge project will be let Jan. 27. Martin says the project will be paid for entirely with federal funds.

Work is expected to begin sometime this spring. The project includes replacing a temporary metal roof with wood shake shingles.

The Jackson County tourism group says the 434-foot long bridge was built in 1875 and is the longest 3-span covered bridge in the country. The structure has deteriorated over the years and hasn’t carried traffic since a nearby concrete bridge was built in 1972.
