RUSHVILLE —
The report of an inverted vehicle in a water-filled drainage ditch, with the driver still inside the vehicle, resulted in multiple responding units converging on South Market Street in the rural community of Carthage late Thursday afternoon.
The caller further advised the Chrysler SUV was on fire.
Rush County deputy sheriff Daniel Meyer said Joyce Ellis, 91, of Carthage, was southbound on Market Street when she drifted off the west side of the street and struck a guardrail that spans an open ditch.
The Chrysler went over an unused concrete bridge foundation and rolled as it entered the waterway before striking a Fountaintown gas line, coming to rest on its top in roughly 12 inches of water.
After shoring up the vehicle that was still resting on the live gas line, responders went about the process of removing the Carthage woman from her vehicle.
Following treatment at the scene, Ellis was transported to Hancock Regional Hospital for unspecified injuries.
