RUSHVILLE —
During the annual National FFA Convention that will be held the final week of October in Indianapolis, four Rushville Consolidated High School FFA members - Matt Busald, Laura Hoeing, Curtis Schwering and Eric Wagner - will receive their American Degree.
Earning the American Degree means that the members join a select group of FFA members nationwide who have exemplified consistent academic and professional excellence.
Degree recipients have demonstrated during their high school years leadership qualities and abilities and sustained achievement in agricultural business, production, possessing or service programs.
To obtain eligibility for the award, members must have earned and productively invested $7,500 through the supervised agricultural experience (SAE) program in which they start, own or hold a professional position in an existing agriculture business.
Recipients must also make it their mission to demonstrate their leadership and community involvement.
RCHS Ag instructor and FFA sponsor Blair Orme said this year’s local recipients have been active leaders in the local FFA chapter and that they are also good students and ambassadors for not only the FFA program but also their school and community.
FFA was known as Future Farmers of America until 1988 when the name was changed to the three letter acronym.
Currently, FFA has 7,489 chapters in the United States with chapters also in Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands. Membership is open to students in grades seven through 12 and the organization currently has nearly 550,000 members.
Each of the American Degree recipients is presented the Gold American FFA Degree along with a certificate recognizing their commitment to the organization.
