RUSHVILLE —
Several local participants, team captains, board members and others were in attendance during a recent meeting in preparation of the June Relay for Life in Rush County.
Also attending were members of the New Salem Lions Club, who were on hand to make a monetary donation to this year’s Relay.
Rush County is a part of the Great Lakes District and during the January meeting it was announced that the monetary goal set by the ACS for the 2013 local event is $35,000.
The 24-hour Relay will begin at 6 p.m. June 14 and continue until 6 p.m. the following day and will be held in South Veterans Memorial Park.
This year’s theme is Rock & Roll, with team themed booths highlighting music of the 1960s, ‘70s and ‘80s taking center stage.
With the exception of the past few years, Rush County has been recognized nationally for their fundraising efforts and organizers hope to return to that status this year.
Team captains meet at 6:30 p.m. the fourth Tuesday of each month leading up to the Relay in Council Chambers (located at the Rushville Police Department, 270 West 15th Street).

According to Stevens, Community Corrections is funded by the Indiana Department of Correction with aspirations that it will, in time, be self-funded. -

As a tribute to the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., the Department of Student Programs (sponsored by the Indiana Association of School Principals) provides an essay contest for middle level and high school students.

FSA announces restart of America’s largest conservation program
Julia A. Wickard, State Executive Director of USDA’s Farm Service Agency (FSA) in Indiana announced FSA is currently conducting Conservation Reserve Program (CRP) signups for both general and continuous CRP. The General Signup began yesterday, May 20, 2013, and continues through June 14. Sign-up for continuous CRP began on May 13 and will continue through Sept. 30, 2013.

County beefs up computer security
During the most recent meeting of the Rush County Commissioners, Rush Count Sheriff Jeff Sherwood informed Bruce Levi, Mark Bacon and Ken Masters that the inmate population at the Rush County Jail continues to increase. According to Sherwood, 46 individuals are currently housed at the facility which is designed for 38 inmates.

Memorial Day service plans announced
Rush County Veterans Service Officer Steve Land and a number of fellow local veterans recently met and completed plans for this year’s local Memorial Day service.

“Smile Fund” accepting applications
Several organizations are working together to continue to give the Rushville community something to smile about.
The Heart of Rushville Downtown Smile Fund is currently accepting applications for projects. -
Rush County Youth Volunteer of the Year nominations open
Rush Memorial Hospital Foundation is accepting nominations for Rush County Youth Volunteer of the Year. This award will be presented to an outstanding Rush County youth by the Rush Memorial Hospital Foundation in recognition of exceptional commitment to philanthropy in the community.
