RUSHVILLE —
The Rushville Police Department, Rush County Sheriff’s Department and the Indiana State Police will begin a high visibility presence on area roads in the coming weeks in an effort to remove impaired drivers from the roadways.
Beginning March 8, the crackdown effort known as “Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over” will begin in earnest and continue through March 24. The effort will encompass a number of March sporting events as well as St. Patrick’s Day weekend.
According to RPD chief Craig Tucker, the OPO provides officers a means to show a strong and visible presence directly aimed at deterring dangerous behaviors and getting drunk drivers off the road.
A Rushville Republican check of arrest reports for operating a motor vehicle while intoxicated since Jan. 1, 2013 found that 19 individuals have been arrested.
For many Hoosiers, the month of March is synonymous with celebrating Indiana basketball and the St. Patrick’s Day holiday. However, due to the increased rate of alcohol consumption the events inspire, the Month of March can also be a very dangerous time on Indiana highways,
Statistics released by the Indiana Criminal Justice Institute found that during 2012 6,264 alcohol-related accident occurred on Hoosier roadways resulting in 97 fatalities.
“These unfortunate statistics demand a sober solution. Whether you are meeting with friends at a local bar after work, attending and or watching a sporting event or participating in any number of St. Patrick’s Day festivities, if you plan on drinking alcohol, don’t drive,” Tucker said.
Tucker and other local and county law enforcement personnel suggest the following as a means to having a safe and happy March.
Plan a safe way home before the festivities begin.
Before drinking, designate a sober driver and leave your keys at home.
If intoxicated, call a friend, a family member, or seek another safe alternative to get home.
No direct local monies are used for the extended man-hours to fund OPO, which is a federally funded law enforcement initiative administered by the Traffic Safety Division of the Indiana Criminal Justice Institute.
